Classic Zinc-Coal Batteries; we had to go all the way to China to find them! The good old zinc-coal batteries, made in a distant corner of China the way they used to be made in the 60ies. Work wonders with all (analogue) distortions, overdrives, boosters and the like ? and they're quicksilver free! Old fashioned zinc-coal batteries have a higher inner resistance than their alkaline counterparts. A zinc-coal battery reacts far better to guitar and picking dynamics. In other terms, the effect is similar to using an amp with a tube rectifier (which has a high inner resistance) in comparison to a modern day, transistor-based rectifier. After ?breaking them in? we discovered the zinc-coal batteries deliver 9V in comparison to the 11V of alkaline batteries. The latter is good for drumming bear toys and other such stuff, but they'll make transistor-based analog effects sound naff in contrast to zinc-coal batteries. We have to admit that we couldn't hear a difference when using both types of batteries in certain pedals. We also have to suggest not to use them in digital pedals as they'll drain them faster than it takes to drive from Milton Keynes to London. But concerning the former, just have a look at the price.... Important: Don't just order batteries. They things weigh a ton and that means higher postage rates. Order them alongside other useful things like power supplies, picks, strings, a pedal... you'll always need strings and picks.
