d'Andrea
Back in the year 1922, when the clever hoover salesman Luigi d'Andrea bought a piece of celluloid on the streets of New Yorks Lower Eastside, he intended on using it to make handles and ornaments for powder boxes. His son Anthony watched him make heart-shaped ornaments, their form reminding him his uncle's mandoline picks.
Anthony incited his father to make picks and soon Luigi landed his first deal in the plectrum business. He sold a small cigarbox full of picks to a music store for ten Dollars.
Plectrums were tediously crafted from the shells of Hawksbill turtles (now an endangered species) in those days, but d'Andrea used tortoiseshell as well as celluloid. He experimented with lots of different shapes, of which no. 351 should become the regular ?Fender-Pick? a quarter of a century later, which still counts as the regular shape for all picks.
Luigi d'Andrea advanced to become the Henry Ford of pickmaking in 1928 and his factory in Manhattan was a Mecca for many guitarists. Nearly the entire d'Andrea family worked in the factory in the ?golden age of plectrums?, i.e. the thirties and forties, and d'Andrea soon became the number one player.
The company has been in business well over eighty years, is in it's third generation and is probably the world's largest pickmaker.
D'Andrea Pro-Plecs Lots of pickmakers try to make plectrums which not only satisfy beginners,
but also advanced and professional players. D'Andrea is no exception.
These picks are no-holds barred. No cheap nylon, nothing bendy in all possible and impossible shapes and colors. Just the six best shapes which musicians need day to day. Very nice tortoiseshell imitation. They not only look good (like the old, striped Gibson J-45 pickguard), they naturally also sound good. Accurate, on the spot, and loud. Details... ab: 1,20 € |
